Thursday, April 27th Glade Springs Resort 5:30-8:30pm
We invite you to come and show your support for this year’s Champions of Children. Here is your opportunity to meet and support the people who are making a difference for children in our community.
As First Responders, five of our Champions put their lives on the line every day to protect our children. Each of these men go over and above in assuring that children get the protection they deserve. We are also recognizing a volunteer who brings joy to nearly every child that comes through our doors by donating Teddy Bear’s.
This year’s Champions are:
Trooper Matt Shifflette, WV State Police, Jesse Detachment
Trooper Richard Paynter, WV State Police, Jesse Detachment
Detective James Pack, Fayette County Sheriff’s Dept.
Detective James Pack, Jr., Oak Hill City Police Dept.
Detective Phil Gunther, Raleigh County Sheriff’s Dept.
Brenda Meadows , Volunteer, Teddy Bear provider
All proceeds from the event will support the essential work of Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center. Our services are free of charge to the children and families who have been traumatized by child sexual abuse, criminal abuse and witnesses to crimes. Our mission is to create a safe community for children and families by preventing and responding to child abuse through teamwork, collaboration and services
Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center will be holding our 6th Annual Champions of Children Dinner at Glade Springs Resort on Thursday, April 27th from 5:30-9pm. The dinner is one of our two major fundraising and awareness events of the year. It is an opportunity to bring the community together and recognize some of the unsung heroes who work tirelessly for the children who are criminally abused every year. This year’s recipients are first responders who literally put their life on the line every day, and a volunteer who brings joy to every child who walks through our doors. Last year, Just For Kids interviewed 300 children where criminal child abuse was alleged. Sixty percent of the children were under 12 years of age and 70% of the children disclosed sexual abuse, criminal physical abuse or were witnesses to violence. Just For Kids plays an essential role in helping the children and families in Raleigh, Fayette and Wyoming Counties heal from this horrific trauma. We would love to count you as a sponsor this year.
Having the event during Child Abuse Prevention Month brings home the importance of the work that Just For Kids does for the communities we serve. Our public funding continues to decrease. Last year we lost all county commission funding, national funding was cut by 12%, and state funding has already been reduced by over ten percent for the coming state fiscal year. In the same period of time we have hired a full time counselor and a full time family advocate to complement the services that we already were providing. This event will help us continue to provide the essential services that help reduce trauma for the children we serve.
Our Champions this year are: Matt Shifflette, Trooper, WV State Police, Jesse Detachment; Richard Paynter, WV State Police, Jesse Detachement; James Pack, Detective, Fayette County Sheriff’s Dept.; James Pack, Detective, Oak Hill Police Dept.; and, Brenda Meadows, volunteer teddy bear provider.
Please consider your sponsorship this year, so that Just For Kids can maintain the level of services that all our children deserve. We have to make up the close to $20,000 reduction of funding we experienced last year. Here is one way you can continue to support the work of Just For Kids Child Advocacy Center.
